This class will introduce students to the world of bladesmithing and knife-making. The goal is to design and craft a tough, full tang camp-style knife that performs well, has pleasing lines, and feels good in your hand. The blade will be up to about 5 inches long and the handle 4 inches for a total knife length of 8 to 9. We will forge the blade and tang from conventional blade steel, and the overall curriculum will emphasize the use of hand tools and traditional blacksmithing techniques, but power tools will also be employed. The handle will be fashioned from micarta (burlap layered with epoxy) or hardwood scales secured to the full tang with metal pins and epoxy glue. After hardening their blades in oil, students will learn to temper them the traditional way by “making the colors run” and quenching by eye. No tempering ovens will be employed. All skill levels are welcome to sign up for this course. No forging experience is necessary. Students with previous blacksmithing experience may be able to craft more advanced blade shapes. If you have watched “Forged in Fire” or YouTube videos and always wanted to try your hand at making your own traditional knife, this class is for you! In addition, students must provide their own air respirator, gloves, and eye and ear protection. Materials fee: $30 (cash only) payable to the instructor on the first night. Class is limited to 4 students. 6 weeks/18 hours
